Congratulations are in order for a great MCDS performance at the Florida State Scholastic Chess Championship! MCDS was represented by 16 players, its greatest representation in any SuperState competition.
K-12 OPEN
This is the second year in a row that the Spartans have finished in the top 4 (last year's finish was 3rd Place) in the highest-rated section of the state championship. The Spartans finished in 4th Place, only a half of a point out of 2nd Place, in a highly competitive section that included one master & five experts. The Spartans were led by Captain Bharat Chandar (4.0/6.0), who finished tied for 8th Place and had a rating increase to 1472. Aaron Ser, Neil Mehta, Ian Gonzalez, Albert Katz, & David Gonzalez also had 3 wins in a strong overall team effort. Congratulations to Coach Peter Konen!

K-12 U/1000
Led by Matthew Cohen & Sascha Kappos (3.5/6.0), the Spartans earned a 3rd Place trophy in the K-12 U/1000 section. Cristian Padilla got 3 victories in his first-ever rated tournament, and Ricky Gonzalez also had multiple wins. This is the first time that MCDS has brought home two K-12 team trophies.

K-3 OPEN
Elliot Starkman (4.5/6.0) brought home a 6th Place individual trophy from the state championship to help the Spartans win the 5th Place team trophy. James Srebnick's performance helped the team finish the best among all two-person teams in the section.

Filippo Sbroggio had a fantastic performance winning five out of his six matches, resulting in a 3rd Place trophy. This was a career performance for Filippo and resulted in a 150 point rating increase!
Aaron Ser & Albert Katz also won a 4th Place trophy in the Bughouse side event.
