Spartans Bring Home Five Trophies from Florida SuperState IX!

Congratulations are in order for a great MCDS performance at the Florida State Scholastic Chess Championship! MCDS was represented by 16 players, its greatest representation in any SuperState competition.

K-12 OPEN
This is the second year in a row that the Spartans have finished in the top 4 (last year's finish was 3rd Place) in the highest-rated section of the state championship. The Spartans finished in 4th Place, only a half of a point out of 2nd Place, in a highly competitive section that included one master & five experts. The Spartans were led by Captain Bharat Chandar (4.0/6.0), who finished tied for 8th Place and had a rating increase to 1472. Aaron Ser, Neil Mehta, Ian Gonzalez, Albert Katz, & David Gonzalez also had 3 wins in a strong overall team effort. Congratulations to Coach Peter Konen!

1st: Nova University School
2nd: Divine Savior Lutheran Academy
3rd: South Dade Senior High School
4th: Miami Country Day School
5th: Gulliver School

K-12 U/1000
Led by Matthew Cohen & Sascha Kappos (3.5/6.0), the Spartans earned a 3rd Place trophy in the K-12 U/1000 section. Cristian Padilla got 3 victories in his first-ever rated tournament, and Ricky Gonzalez also had multiple wins. This is the first time that MCDS has brought home two K-12 team trophies.

1st-South Dade Senior High School
2nd-Archbishop Curley-Notre Dame High School
3rd-Miami Country Day School
4th-Hialeah Garden Middle School
5th-Shenandoah Middle School

K-3 OPEN
Elliot Starkman (4.5/6.0) brought home a 6th Place individual trophy from the state championship to help the Spartans win the 5th Place team trophy. James Srebnick's performance helped the team finish the best among all two-person teams in the section.

1st-Elbridge Gale Elementary
2nd-Williams Elementary
3rd-Norwood Elementary
4th-Twin Lakes Elementary
5th-Miami Country Day School

K-3 U/500
Filippo Sbroggio had a fantastic performance winning five out of his six matches, resulting in a 3rd Place trophy. This was a career performance for Filippo and resulted in a 150 point rating increase!

Aaron Ser & Albert Katz also won a 4th Place trophy in the Bughouse side event.

Some pictures from the event are available now at https://www.dropbox.com/gallery/46730067/1/SuperState%20IX?h=878da4. More will be added later in the week.

Congratulations, again, to our teams and trophy winners!

Superstate IX: Day One

After four rounds of play, the K-12 Open team has 8.5 points. Until I'm able to see the posted standings, I'm not sure exactly what place that is. However, if I had to predict, it would be 3rd Place currently, perhaps two points out of 1st. Ser has 2.5/4.0, and Chandar, Mehta, Werner, & Ian Gonzalez all have 2.0.

The K-12 U/1000 team has 6.5 points, enough for approximately 6th Place at the moment. Cohen & Padilla have 2.0/4.0 for the day, Ricky Gonzalez has 1.5, and Sascha Kappos has 1.0.

Starkman had an undefeated day at 3.5/4.0 in the K-3 Open section. That should put him in the top 3 going into round 5. Srebnick has 2.5/4.0.

Sbroggio is playing well in the K-3 U/500 with 3.0/4.0.

Lots of potential for great things tomorrow in rounds 5 & 6. Stay tuned to @SpartanChess on twitter for more frequent updates. Katz & Ser are playing the Bughouse side event this evening.
